Where do images get uploaded?

We've moved BigTree to another system and are having trouble uploading images. The error is:

Could not upload file. The destination is not writable.

But I'm not sure where this location is relative to the site root. The documentation mentions a `files/uploads` path. But that already has the correct permissions and even setting them to 777 doesn't fix it.

What are the file upload paths that the web server process will need to write to?

Go to the Developer tab and choose Site Status. It will tell you a list of directories that have improper permissions for uploads. The /site/files/ directory is used for temporary files -- fields generally have their own directories chosen for uploads that are within that directory.
